“One of the great US songwriters…11 new originals…several of them are among his best…Case knows that his songs don’t need perfume and a clean suit.” – MOJO

"...It is a powerful set that finds his skills as a songwriter and his strength as a singer undiminished...Doctor Moan finds Peter Case in outstanding mature form...A grade”
    --- THE VINYL DISTRICT

“Doctor Moan is filled with personal reflections on a long, storied career, but it’s never maudlin or dispirited. In fact, Case’s varied musical palette commands the listener to lean in close to view musical dioramas of scenes gone by, from the barroom blues of “Ancient Sunrise” to the Memphis appeal of “The Flying Crow.” Even the lovely two-minute “4D,” Case’s first recorded instrumental, lends further emotion and shadow to a three-dimensional listen.” -- NO DEPRESSION

“The cinematic and evocative single and album opener, “Have You Ever Been in Trouble” sets the tone for Peter Case’s Doctor Moan album.” – THE BIG TAKEOVER

On 16th solo album Doctor Moan, triple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Peter Case channels spirits of jazz, blues, and boogie-woogie into exquisitely nuanced expressions. Released by Sunset Blvd Records, Case’s first piano-based release is sonically sparse yet emotionally rich, capturing the peak of both his songcraft and voice with an organic authenticity rare in the digital age. “I try to take things I love and use them in a new way,” mulled Case. “I grew up on 1950s and ‘60s rock & roll and folk. I learned how to play blues here in San Francisco, out on the street, and then was part of the punk rock movement … It’s all still in there; it’s my musical DNA. Hopefully it opens up peoples’ hearts and lets them feel emotions that they want to feel but don’t usually have,” he concluded. “And a lot of them are focused on surviving in this world now, so hopefully the warmth of companionship and comfort, too.”

Have You Ever Been In Trouble? Have you ever been in trouble? Do you remember how it feels? Or are you living in a bubble Caught between the wheels? Tonight you feel the danger Rising on the wind Tearing at your jacket Ripping at your skin Have you ever been in trouble? You slipped by somehow Have you ever been in trouble-- The kind you're in right now? There's freedom down the bending avenue Do you see someone coming? Something you can do? Flip the coin forever--heads or tails Winner gets the upstairs room The loser cries and wails and sorely grieves-- How do you believe? Ask and you'll receive Have you ever been abandoned? Did you ever run at night? The streets a maze beneath your feet Your heart concealed in fright Prayed in desperation Felt the Holy Ghost Coming down the alley Just like a megadose... Have you ever been in trouble? You slipped by somehow Have you ever been in trouble-- The kind you're in right now? There's freedom down the bending avenue Do you see someone coming? Something you can do? There's one thing I know for sure is real The moment you surrender The wounds begin to heal Here's your reprieve Ask and you'll receive How do you believe? Ask and you'll receive.

That Gang Of Mine In the ballroom alone--the party's moved on The bottles are empty and everyone's gone What ever happened to that gang of mine? We had big plans laid out in red For walking on water and raising the dead Whatever happened to the summertime? What ever happened to that gang of mine? On the curbstone tonight--to look down the road To see someone coming or somewhere to go A stoplight bobs and weaves on the powerline Some cops came to spy and pass right on through Trucks rolling by--the ice wagon too Whatever happened to the summertime? What ever happened to that gang of mine? There was a light rain falling on the fields at dark As our music played low Laughing, joking, blind words spoken I must admit that I was choking in the afterglow I had to go-- Whatever happened to that gang of mine Whatever happened to that gang of mine All that's left are here right now, so There's no past and no tomorrow Tho' something sweet's been left behind We're cut loose from the double bind Whatever happened to that gang of mine Whatever happened to that gang of mine

Round-the-Clock Diner on a weekday night Big T and the gang try'na start a fight Political talk--don't make sense They crowd around the table and the room gets tense You know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere At the corner on a microdose of LSD She fiddles with the jukebox and her destiny The walls are moving--the food is dust One song keeps playing to T's disgust And you know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere You know we don't get along You know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere You know we don't get along You know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere Back table there's a kid's been painting vans Just returned from Afghanistan Candy-c0lored stripes and shapes go far They can airbrush a galaxy on your car Try'na how to get along Downtown Nowhere Out front by the curb they're making noise A bunch of old men that act like boys Big T turns to me while I'm try'na chew Says "If I had a dog half as ugly as you I'd make him walk backward through Downtown Nowhere And you know we don't get along You know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere You know we don't get along You know we don't get along Downtown Nowhere

Eyes Of Love 05:26
Eyes Of Love I fix my eyes on lines of strangers Lift a song--sweet--stolen from a king Never guess the meaning of kindness 'Til you turn to me With the eyes of love With the eyes of love With the eyes of love Love's to the reason what eyes are to the mind I stumble and fall without knowing Where I stop or who walks by my side Never hear the words of forgiveness 'Til you let me see With the eyes of love With the eyes of love With the eyes of love Love's to the reason what eyes are to the mind I climb back up--return to battle The peace we crave--just another kind of war This cold land--lost and forgotten 'Til you set me free Through the eyes of love Through the eyes of love Through the eyes of love Love's to the reason what eyes are to the mind.

Give me five minutes more To sell this thing To tell my story And straighten it out Give me five minutes more To see her one more time To fix the trouble And try it again Give me five minutes more Only five minutes more Give me five minutes more To answer the question To find the solution To look it up Give me five minutes more To explain myself Win or lose To turn it around Give me five minutes more Five minutes more Give me five minutes more Only five minutes more To get it straight To let it go To say goodbye To say hello To pick it up To put it down To make them laugh And calm them down Give me five minutes more Only five minutes more Settle for less Look for proof Expose the lies To check on the roof To tell them why To plug the leak Acknowledge the fool And protect the weak Give me five minutes more Only five minutes more, etc... To discover the worth Quiet the moan To inherit the earth And rewrite this song Give me five minutes!

Barely fifteen with no memory of being a child Happy carefree--so glad to be set loose in the wild The world is so wide I had to see it from the other side Talking 'bout the windblown wondering And these wandering days Post office--we were staring at the mugs on the wall Gone to sign on with the union at the Maritime Hall Through the portal of blue The sea's a highway leads me on to you In these windblown wondering And our wandering days Then I saw you there--with your eyes all ablaze Bringin' 'em in through the astral-blue haze The waves were so high--the sunlight so cold On the crest "Do or Die" As the ship pitched and rolled Across the Northern Bay with the sailors Who were rolling the bones We'd gamble on the quays on our knees While the fog-whistle moans The Milky Way round our necks Hammocks swinging on the open decks In these windblown wondering And our wandering days Landlocked in these rooms There's not too much to say Never fond of my sleep-- Now I'm sleeping all day We'll get to the end Some have to shatter 'fore They learn to bend Talking 'bout the windblown wondering And these wandering days.

The cuckoos were hollering in the Juniper trees We stole wild honey Got chased by the bees Hit the shortcut--headed for home I open my eyes and I wasn't alone It was you and me-- Just you and me-- In that ancient sunrise The shadows were deep You could feel it might right rain Hear the minor chords wailing from a passing freight train At the all-night station we were syphoning fuel As that big red ball bounced up by the school It was you and me-- In that ancient sunrise In that ancient sunrise when the world began For a five-letter woman and a four-letter man A couple of children caught by surprise Good things can happen But first you get wise There was a kid out to get me He looked like a man He said I'd been kissing on his girl friend Lu-Ann We just laughed and took off to the shadows of night We were standing there shivering in a cold streak of light You and me-- Just you and me-- In that ancient sunrise

The Flying Crow left New Orleans At Shreveport took a crew Changed water in Texarcana And the driver said "Push on through" Don't you know we're gone Got two lights on-- Two lights on behind The red light that means trouble Green light's a wandering mind Twenty-five minutes past seven A cup of coffee and a slice of cake We'll be all the way to Kansas City Before the driver ever hits the brake Don't you know we're gone Got two lights on-- Two lights on behind The red light that means trouble Green light's a wandering mind You can take your money, baby throw it against the wall You can keep everything that sticks They'll take everything that falls Don't you know we're gone Got two lights on-- Two lights on behind The red light that means trouble Green light's a wandering mind How soon 'til you forget me, baby? Why do you hide your face? I'm begging you for mercy You're making it a federal case Don't you know we're gone Got two lights on-- Two lights on behind The red light that means trouble Green light's a wandering mind My woman's got a mouth Like a lighthouse on the sea Everytime she looks my way She shines her light on me Don't you know we're gone Got two lights on-- Two lights on behind The red light that means trouble Green light's a wandering mind

I had no way of reaching you I still don't know if I got through The room was dark, so was the park I wondered if I'd ever spark That girl in love with a shadow That girl in love with a shadow We were down in South L.A. I finally had a job to play There was a night I spent in jail I saw the light but lost the trail Of that girl in love with a shadow That girl's in love with a shadow Pencil numbers on the wall That night I must've tried them all A voice said "she's not around She's gone out to the edge of town To chase a ghost where shadows fall --Can't say if she's coming back at all" That girl's in love... I had no way of keeping track Tho' I'm still trying to bring her back Through the years that come and go Pulled out in the undertow That girl's in love with a shadow That girl in love with a shadow
